Miami, FL – The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) Florida hosted two insightful literary lectures on November 18 and 19, 2023, focusing on key aspects of Dominican history and identity. The events were held at the GFDD Florida facilities and featured esteemed historians Dr. Frank Moya Pons and Dr. José Rafael Lantigua.
On November 18, Dr. Frank Moya Pons, a distinguished historian and author, presented a lecture on “Early Epidemics in the Island of Santo Domingo.” The discussion provided a comprehensive overview of the historical impact of early epidemics on the development of the island, highlighting the social, economic, and cultural consequences that shaped the region’s history.
The following day, on November 19, Dr. José Rafael Lantigua, a renowned writer and cultural scholar, delivered a lecture titled “Languages and Registers in the Construction of Dominican Nationality.” Dr. Lantigua explored the role of language and cultural expressions in shaping the Dominican national identity, offering a deep dive into the various linguistic and cultural influences that have contributed to the formation of the Dominican Republic’s national consciousness.
Both events were well-attended by members of the Dominican diaspora and the local academic community, fostering lively discussions and a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural foundations of the Dominican Republic.
