Leonel Fernández and Felipe González warn of “Global Chaos” and call for renewed Ibero-American unity

Madrid, Spain, June 8 – Former President of the Dominican Republic and President of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Leonel Fernández, and former Prime Minister of Spain, Felipe González, agreed in warning that the current international context is experiencing a phase of “global chaos,” while calling for the renewed strategic articulation of Ibero-America.

The statements were made during the Ibero-American Dialogue, titled “Ibero-America in the New World Order,” held at the Autonomous University of Madrid and moderated by journalist and academic Juan Luis Cebrián. The discussion addressed the main geopolitical, economic, and democratic challenges facing the region.

Fernández argued that Latin America has historically been a “permanent political laboratory,” where economic factors have played a decisive role in institutional stability. Based on this analysis, he emphasized the need to rebuild a shared vision that would allow coordinated progress in areas such as the economy, security, culture, and the defense of human rights.

In this context, he evoked the founding spirit of the Ibero-American Summits as a reference point for political and strategic coordination, highlighting that the region possesses the necessary elements to reposition itself on the global stage.

For his part, González stated that while there is no new international order, there is an environment of uncertainty characterized by “absolute chaos,” which obliges Ibero-American countries to strengthen their cooperation mechanisms. He also warned of a prolonged crisis in the governance of representative democracies and highlighted the potential impacts that global tensions could have on the region.

The exchange, moderated by Cebrián, underscored the urgency of reaching regional consensus on key issues, particularly in matters of security, which González argued must be approached from a cross-cutting perspective beyond ideological positions.

This dialogue is part of the academic and institutional agenda promoted by GFDD, aimed at fostering analysis, strategic reflection, and the strengthening of ties between Ibero-America and Spain.
