Madrid, June 2026 – Former President of the Dominican Republic and President of GFDD, Leonel Fernández, arrived in Spain this Sunday to undertake a high-level agenda from June 7 to 12 aimed at strengthening political, academic, and cultural dialogue throughout the Ibero-American community.
This agenda, coordinated through GFDD Spain, is part of a broader strategy designed to enhance the international projection of the Dominican Republic through thought leadership, cooperation, and cultural diplomacy. Through these efforts, the country seeks to strengthen its position within the Ibero-American sphere, promote academic and cultural exchanges, and foster strategic partnerships that contribute to national development and the international visibility of Dominican talent.
One of the central events will be the GFDD Ibero-American Forum, to be held at the prestigious Complutense University of Madrid, where political leaders, academics, and business representatives will examine the region’s challenges in the global arena. Discussions will focus on topics such as geopolitics, economics, migration, innovation, and academic cooperation.
In addition, the Ibero-American Dialogue will bring together Leonel Fernández and former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González for a conversation on the emerging world order, democracy, artificial intelligence, and the challenges of global governance. This meeting will serve as a strategic forum for reflection between two prominent figures in Ibero-American political leadership.
The agenda also includes significant cultural diplomacy initiatives, such as the donation of Dominican works to Spanish institutions, with the objective of promoting Dominican thought and intellectual production in Europe.
As part of this cultural outreach, GFDD will have a prominent presence at the Madrid Book Fair, fostering engagement with authors, academics, and readers while reaffirming the role of culture as a bridge connecting nations.
Through this agenda, Leonel Fernández continues to promote a vision of Ibero-America grounded in knowledge, cooperation, and institutional strengthening, contributing to the positioning of the Dominican Republic within the region and reinforcing GFDD’s role as an active platform for advancing Ibero-American thought.
