José Zaiter highlights the historical significance of Dominican Independence during Dominican-American Cultural Week

MIAMI, FL – As part of the celebration of the Twentieth Dominican-American Cultural Week, José Zaiter, Executive Director of GFDD-Florida, delivered a moving historical reflection on the Independence of the Dominican Republic during an event held at the Miami-Dade County Government Building.

The event was part of the official program of Dominican-American Cultural Week, an initiative that for two decades has promoted pride, identity, and civic participation within the Dominican diaspora in South Florida.

During his remarks, Zaiter highlighted the legacy of the Founding Fathers and underscored the importance of preserving the values of liberty, democracy, and civic engagement that gave birth to the Dominican nation. He also emphasized the vital role the diaspora plays in strengthening cultural and democratic ties between the Dominican Republic and the United States.

The event was attended by distinguished community leaders and local officials, including:

  • Rosa E. Kasse, President of the Hispanic Coalition and Co-Coordinator of Dominican-American Cultural Week.
  • Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor of Miami-Dade County.
  • Marisol Centeno, President of the League of Women Voters.
  • Griselle Mariño, President of the Hispanic Advisory Board.
  • Community leaders, special guests, and representatives of civic organizations.

Dominican-American Cultural Week, organized by Latinos Unidos and the Hispanic Coalition, celebrates its twentieth edition this year with a series of cultural, educational, and community activities that strengthen ties within the Dominican diaspora and promote active civic engagement throughout Miami-Dade County.

GFDD-Florida reaffirms its commitment to continuing to foster dialogue, historical reflection, and institutional collaboration to advance the social, economic, and democratic development of our communities.
