The tragedy of the Jet Set induces us to meditate on the meaning of life. With what happened, Dominican society has been shaken, mourned, saddened.
We did not find a logical answer as to why, in such an abrupt and unexpected way, more than 200 people were victims of a horrible death, while more than a hundred are still waiting for their full recovery.
Why is the human condition so fragile and vulnerable? How, in fractions of seconds, does an atmosphere of celebration and celebration become a scene of blood and pain? What is the reason for our existence?
We live everyday life in the midst of family, work, friends, entertainment, learning, communication, church, politics, the worries of daily life, etc.
Through time, outstanding thinkers have reflected on the meaning of life. For Seneca, the Stoic philosopher, life is divided into three times: present, past and future. Of these, the present is very brief; the future, doubtful; the past, true.
In a more mundane way, in a memorable film by Woody Allen, Manhattan, he also wonders what life is for, which it provides us.
Answer in a very simple way. Life is about eating a hot dog. It’s to see Willie Mays playing. It is, in essence, enjoying the small trivialities and the insipid and innocuous things with which we feed our being every 24 hours.
It is to conceive our existence through the joyful enjoyment of life. Since the twilight faces the dawn to see who triumphs, according to Shakespeare’s phrase.
We live to the fullest every day when we find breakfast on the table, we take our children to school, we learn about what is happening in the world, we go to work, we appreciate a piece of music, we discover a new book, we bite our nails watching the game of Licey and the Chosen and we challenge our friends for a game of dominoes or chess.
In short, we live as in a kind of routine, of circular life that, however, does not lead us to boredom, because as the Apostle Paul says, every day brings his eagerness.
The good thing about life
Although sometimes we complain, we get discouraged and even distressed, life is beautiful. It’s worth living. Throughout our existence, it provides us with indelible pleasant, pleasant and pleasant moments.
From the cradle to the tomb we live in constant learning. We open our senses to the world. During years of studies, we became rational beings capable of discerning about nature, society and the human condition.
Our spirit of sensitivity leads us to assume the representation of a cause. We resist being indifferent to everything that degrades our sense of dignity, honor and decorum.
For some, their cause, their life purpose, is the family. They dedicate all their energies to the growth of all their members, to their well-being and so that they can crystallize their dreams and illusions of progress and progress.
For others, it is the struggle for freedom, democracy and justice. The commitment made in the defense of such noble ideals is of such magnitude that one is available, if necessary, to even shed blood and offer life.
For all that, of course, another vital component is required: love. This is so, because it is the feeling that connects us affectively with God, with the Homeland, with our parents, children and friends.
In the end, everything comes to an end; and when that happens, what remains is the memory, the memory of everything that was done in our passage through this world.
Thus, to live to the fullest is to learn to discern about the real world. It is to make love the engine that drives all our actions; and it is to leave a legacy of struggle and solidarity.
The tragedy
From the very moment of birth, we know that we are condemned to die. What we do not know is when and how the outcome will occur.
In itself, human existence is brief. A century ago, old age was reached less than 50 years of age. Due to the advancement of science and medicine, life expectancy is currently above 70 years.
In this way, there is a life cycle that every human being must, in principle, exhaust. When that does not occur, it is because the cycle has been interrupted abruptly, generating greater sadness because the departure has occurred at the wrong time.
This is what happened with the Jet Set tragedy. Most of those who were there were very far from reaching the biological limit that nature imposes on us. On the contrary, they were young people, lovers of music and dance.
There were them from the most diverse sectors. There were businessmen, athletes, artists, politicians, academics, students, workers and housewives. In addition, coming from a diversity of provinces of the country, as well as abroad.
There had been a great advertising display of what would be a night to enjoy, with the return to the stage of the great musical master, Rubby Pérez and his orchestra.
In the graphs presented, you can see the great enthusiasm that reigned in the place. There was part of the audience that got up to sing, while others took over the dance floor to exhibit their dancing skills.
In short, there could be no better environment to celebrate, have fun and share a night that became memorable. But, unexpectedly, stealthily, a dust began to descend on the assistants. Then, surprisingly, the collapse occurred, causing the great tragedy.
Since then, Dominican society feels as if the full weight of the tragedy fell on her heart, leaving her breathless, moved, immersed in a state of heartbreak, melancholy and nostalgia. We will never forget the victims of the Jet Set.
